The new paradigm: dementia in an era of treatments

Treatments mark a fundamental change for the field and overtime the experience and care of people with dementia. The first treatments mark a significant shift for the field. For the first time Alzheimer's disease is treatable. Even if the impact of treatments is limited and, at the moment, is available in only a few countries, this signals the direction of travel for the field. Over the years ahead there will be more treatments, for Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, and to both manage symptoms and to modify the course of the disease. These will be easier and cheaper to deliver and bring greater benefits for patients and caregivers. The World Dementia Council is launching a new project exploring the impact and implications of new treatments and the early lessons from the roll out of these first treatments. The project begins with three virtual dialogues for global experts. The first dialogue will explore practical lessons from the delivery of treatments. As current treatments are approved in more countries, and we think about future treatments, in clinical and research settings, what early lessons can be drawn from the experience of delivering treatments to date? The second dialogue will explore lessons for advocacy movements. And a third dialogue will explore lessons for health systems. Further information about the project will be announced later in the year. Read more about the dialogues below.
